9/14/18 Parent Newsletter

Dear Parents,                                                               September 14, 2018

It's been a wonderful and very busy week here in 4th grade!  Our first full week!  We had our first guidance class with Mrs. Caron on Monday and the students are excited to have her back at UID!! The weather has allowed us to get outside for some science and to enjoy summer before it's over!

This week we were also able to begin some assessments.  We are currently doing the DSA, which is a developmental spelling assessment that will enable us to design our spelling program to help all students with spelling fluency.  We put our writing notebooks together and are brainstorming big and small moments that we can write about. Our first piece will be a realistic fiction small moment story.  This can be hard for students, as they are more comfortable with writing fictional stories that involve more fantasy elements.  Our first unit will help them with this writing genre!

In science, we are learning what scientists do and the skills and tools they use to make observations and to ask ask questions.  We collected leaves that we observed, sketched and asked questions about.  We will then try to find the answers to our questions by investigating further.  These are two very important skills, not only in science, but other subjects as well.  In math, we are starting the year looking at patterns.  We will be exploring complex patterns as well as unknowns and how to solve pre-algebraic type problems involving balanced equations and repeating patterns.  It's a great way to get the kids engaged with how awesome numbers can be!

We also continued to practice what teamwork is with teamwork challenges. The students are beginning to understand what needs to happen as they learn to work together.  We then thought about what rules and expectations we needed to have in our classroom to make sure that our year is fun, inspiring, challenging and joyful.  Below are many photos from our work this week. Enjoy them!

Our hike is coming up next Friday!  Here is what Mrs. Cote shared in the Grapevine regarding chaperones. Hopefully this is helpful, but please contact the office if you are unsure.

Fall Hike on September 21st (Rain Date September 28th)
UID's annual fall hike at Mills Riverside Park is scheduled for Friday, September 21st at 12:30pm.  If you are interested in chaperoning, please contact Jenn Cote at 899-4680 or jenn.cote@cesuvt.org.

Please keep in mind that you DO NOT need to be fingerprinted to volunteer on the school hike.  The district requests that all chaperones complete the Volunteer Screening Form either at the Central Office or online.  The fingerprint requirement is only for volunteers who will have unsupervised contact with students such as leading a small group.  Please review the MMMUSD-CESU Expectations for Volunteers document for additional explanation of fingerprinting and background checks.  This information is also also available on the
district website.

In addition, please keep in mind that all students need to be accounted for after they have completed the hike.  For those families who are volunteering to help with the hike and are planning on dismissing their child before 2:35 PM, please check in with Pam Preston, administrative assistant,  before leaving school grounds.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend! The weather looks amazing!

Tracy and Carolyn
