Dear Parents, November 2, 2018
And suddenly, it's November already! Time truly does fly! We celebrated Halloween this week with a wonderful mask parade and lots of fun activities and food thanks to the PTO! Students also watched Coco in Spanish on Halloween day and enjoyed it very much.
Things will hopefully settle back down next week! We have started our new units in math and writing. We begin our realistic fiction book clubs on Tuesday. Students will work in small groups, taking notes about their characters and the plot. This will help them to summarize and write book reviews. We have also been exploring poetry and readers theater as opportunities for students to learn about different literary devices and work on fluency. Just a reminder that the book project is due on November 15th! We are looking forward to sharing these with each other!
We learned about 3D printers this week. Shaun Longevin, our tech education support person, made us 7 rubber band race cars to use in science. He also showed us how the 3D printer works. It took around 8 hours to make each car! See pictures below of the finished product. We hope to race these next week and build our own rubber band powered race cars. We also hope for nicer weather so we can get outside and do more with scale and distance. Students investigated scale of miles on the Vermont map and we will be comparing this with other, larger states. We paced out the length of Vermont, 159 miles, using our own feet. Next up, perhaps Texas, using the same scale! We then move into geography and it's role in Vermont's history. So much to learn about our wonderful state.
Carolyn's solo week is fast approaching! She will be completely in charge of the classroom the last week of November. I will be near by, but the students will look to her during all instruction. We have begun planning for that week and I am confident in Carolyn's ability to handle the everyday routine and learning with our 4th graders. Please let us know if you have any questions about this process.
Be sure to sign up for the Thanksgiving lunch on November 15th, if you are able to join us. We are also in the process of planning a writing celebration that day. A busy month ahead!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Tracy and Carolyn
