12/14/18 Parent Newsletter

Dear Parents,                                                                       December 14, 2018

Happy Friday!  What a whirlwind week it's been!  There has been lots of preparation here in all the classrooms for our craft fair on Tuesday.  We are all ready and are grateful for the help today from Bridget Dorman.  We also can't wait to sing for you at the concert.  The students practiced some of their songs today, and they sound amazing!

We are finishing up a number of units before the winter break.  Our unit on addition and subtraction will wrap up next week and the students will take the assessment. They have worked hard on place value and how to regroup larger numbers.  We will continue to practice these skills throughout the year during our 10 minute math as well as through the review that is included in later units.

We will be finishing up our ice cream essay and writing several other essays during January.  Students will also pick their own topic to write a persuasive essay about. We will be discussing natural resources and conservation during this time and these ideas will be great topics to write about! Our next reading unit is on non-fiction.  We will be exploring text features and how to summarize non-fiction reading as it's very different from fiction. We will be starting our unit on Vermont government and how it works.  I plan to schedule our trip to the State House and Historical Society in Montpelier during the end of January.

Recycle Rhonda, from Chittenden Solid Waste District, spoke with us on Thursday about recycling.  We then practiced sorting, and what to recycle. compost, or throw in the trash.  She also helped set us up for recycling now at lunch. In January we will be presenting more about recycling to each of the classrooms so that they know what and how to recycle.  Your child can help you if you aren't sure!

 Upcoming events:

December 18th: Winter Sing Along Concert and Craft Fair.  Concert begins at 1:00.  Craft fair is right after.
December 19th:  Shopping Trip (if your child is going please make sure that you have sent in the permission slips and lunch choices).  The 6 students staying back at school will be helping in the K, 1 and 2 classrooms while we are gone.  They will help do the wrapping in the afternoon.
December 20th:  Caroling at the Jeri Hill Senior Housing in the afternoon.
December 21st:  Stuffed animal day and all school movie in the afternoon, Carolyn's last day.

There will be no homework next week except for reading.  Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

Tracy and Carolyn
